For those users who are not Christian, this is just a way of telling us we’re not as valued as users who are. Other people have holidays too, but I don’t see any special icons for those.

I enjoyed the little surprise because the Santa phenomenon has become a Western icon for act of selfless giving and acknowledgment that there are Gifts that humankind receives that come from a place more profound than ordinary “howdy” everyday life. In that spirit, I appreciate the VLC people took a risk that I might not read that little “santa hat” or “elf hat” as a tacit expression of their wish that everyone share in the act of giving and remember that which is Greater.
